What’s New at MAH?

Laser Therapy

Have you noticed your pet slowing down or having trouble with everyday movement?  No pet owner wants to see their furry family member suffer from joint and muscle pain.  Our new K-laser Therapy might help alleviate your pet’s chronic pain.  As your pet ages, the probability of arthritic pain increases greatly; at age 8-10 years, 27% of dogs suffer from arthritis.  The numbers increase to 37% for dogs 11-13 years old.  It is more difficult to diagnose arthritic pain in cats due to the stoic nature of the species.  If your cat is jumping less, resting more, having trouble getting in and out the litterbox or isolating themselves from the family pain may be the issue!

Marion Animal Hospital now has a safe, effective, drug-free option to decrease and manage your pet’s pain and stiffness.  K-laser therapy is non-invasive, well tolerated and accepted by pets, and has minimal to no side effects!  K-laser therapy also has a wide range of additional indications.  It may be used to help promote healing and decrease pain and swelling in many inflammatory conditions.  Some of the additional uses include:  wound treatment, post-surgical treatment, lick granulomas, hot spots, ear infections and post-dental treatment/surgery.

Trifexis

Trifexis is the newest broad-spectrum parasite protection for dogs.   It is a convenient, once monthly oral tablet that protects against heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and kills fleas!  It is perfect for families with children or other pets since there is no transfer of product through contact with the dog.  There is no mess, no staining of carpet, furniture, or clothing, and no need to isolate after treatment!   Dogs that swim, are bathed frequently, or have skin conditions are safely and conveniently protected.  For more information, visit www.elancopet.com.

Assurity

Assurity is the first flea treatment and preventative designed JUST for cats.  It provides fast acting and long lasting flea control with one monthly topical application.  It is easy to apply and has a low volume dose that is effective for cats of all sizes (eight weeks and older).  For more information, visit www.assurity4cats.com.

Canine Influenza

Canine influenza is a newly emerging infectious disease that is highly contagious between dogs.  This strain ONLY AFFECTS DOGS.  Thirty states including Ohio have reported cases since the virus was first reported in Florida in March of 2003.  Because the virus is relatively new and dogs have no natural immunity to it, virtually every dog exposed to the virus will become infected.  About 80% of these will show clinical signs of infection and become sick.  Dogs that do not show signs of the disease can still spread the virus to other dogs.  Outbreaks generally occur in locations where many dogs come into contact such as veterinary clinics, kennels, and shelters.  Signs of infection include coughing, low grade fever, nasal discharge, lethargy, and lack of appetite.  Most (80%) will have mild disease but others can develop serious life threatening respiratory infection and pneumonia.  Vaccination is the best way to protect your dog if it is exposed to situations where canine influenza may be spread.  While the vaccine may not completely prevent illness, it is clinically proven to significantly reduce the severity and length of illness.  If your dog is being vaccinated for Bordatella (Kennel Cough) it is a good candidate for the Canine Influenza Vaccine.  For more information, visit www.doginfluenza.com.
